Take it from me. There are only a few inexpensive things that you need to do a manicure on your own. In the long run it will save you a trip to the nail salon and will give you the chance you have some ';me time'; as I like to call it, at home.

First you will need some nail polish remover to remove any remaining nail polish prior to starting the manicure. Typically non-acetone remover is the best for removing nail polish with either a Q-tip or cotton ball.

Second, using nail clippers and a nail file, shape your finger nails to your desired shape. Rounded or square are the most popular. I find rounded to be more comfortable and natural looking.

Third, grab a warm bowl of soapy water and with either an old toothbrush or a hand brush soak your nails and clean underneath them with the brush. The hand bath will soften your nails and cuticles.

Fourth, after about 5 to 10 minutes, take your hands out of the water and dry them off. At this point you can apply some cuticle oil/balm or even a good hand lotion to your cuticles (the rib of skin that sticks out at the nail bed). With an orange stick, push back the cuticle (might hurt a little). Remove any excess lotion or balm with a towel.

Fifth, at this point, you can apply a first coat of your nailpolish. Let this layer dry for about 5 minutes (if it isn't the quick-dry nailpolish), add another layer of color after that and repeat drying process for 10 to 15 minutes (sometimes longer). After this, you can apply a clear, pearlized or colored topcoat. Let dry again.

I have tried all kinds of nailpolish and methods of manicuring my nails. This seems to have been the best steps to take for me, which are similar to how they do nails in a salon. You can buy any brand of nailpolish as well. I might recommend my favorite line OPI, only because they sell a real wide variety for good quality at Sally Beauty Stores, and for a reasonable price.

After practicing manicures on myself for years, I prefer doing my own just because I can.
Before you do anything, first wash your hands with gentle soap and warm water. If there is dirt underneath the nails, use a nail brush to scrub it to make nails clean. If there is nail polish on nails, use a nourishing nail polish remover and cotton balls to remove it.

Basic Manicure

1. File nails first with a fine grit nail file. Get a nice shape to your nails-rounded, square, up to you. And file in only one direction.

2. Soak your nails in a small bowl of warm water for 3-5 minutes. After that dry hands with a towel.

3. Now push your cuticles back with the flat end of a cuticle stick. Since the cuticles are already softened, it shouldn't hurt and should be an easy thing to do.

4. Before you start your polish, you should swipe nails with some polish remover to dehydrate them so polish can adhere on nails better.

5. Put on a base coat first, which is a clear coat. Use only three strokes. This will prevent the staining of your nails. Then do your two coats of polish when the base coat dries. Your top coat will seal the polish in. Make sure nail polish dries before you do anything with your hands!

Remember: Massage on hand lotion if hands are dry!
